On August 3, 2021, Tyler Gilbert fulfilled his lifelong dream of playing Major League Baseball when he was selected in the Rule 5 draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks. On that same day he made his first appearance as a relief pitcher by not allowing a single run against the San Francisco Giants. 11 days later, Gilbert became the 4th player in Major League Baseball history to throw a no-hitter in his first start, the first player to do so since 1953.
In the offseason, Gilbert came back home to Santa Cruz to train and prepare for the 2022 season. In this video he reflects on the place and people that helped him get to where he is now.
The video, produced by Gilbert’s high school teammate and local media producer Nick Sherrell, prominently features East Cliff, Paradigm Gym and San Lorenzo Valley High School. With appearances by SLV Varsity Baseball Coach Shane Sutcliffe, Paradigm Gym owner Joey Wolfe and others, Gilbert pays homage to the community that helped him along his journey to the Major Leagues.
Tyler is thankful for the support of his community and those whole helped him along the way including his parents, Greg and Peggy, his fiancé Caitlin Akeman, training partner and fellow SLV-alum Zach Settles, high school baseball coach Shane Sutcliffe and many others.
