With the current Shelter in place, we thought it would be good to reach out to someone in the local fitness world to help us keep fit during this time. Of course we thought of Daniel J from CrossFit West Santa Cruz. Here is what he had to say:
With the Shelter in place, gyms are closed, limiting access to fitness equipment for avid gym goers. With the restlessness building by staying home for large portions of the day, Netflix and streaming services just play throughout the day because options seem limited.
Fitness is extremely important to our health and well being. The most current physical activity guidelines states that children to older adults should participate in some form of physical activity appropriate to them.
Children and adolescents from 6-17 years of age should participate in 1 hour or more of moderate to vigorous activity a day. “For substantial health benefits, adults should do at least 150 minutes (2 hours and 30 minutes) to 300 minutes (5 hours) a week of moderate-intensity, or 75 minutes (1 hour and 15 minutes) to 150 minutes (2 hours and 30 minutes) a week of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity, or an equivalent combination of moderate- and vigorous-intensity aerobic activity. Preferably, aerobic activity should be spread throughout the week.” (Physical Activity Guidelines, 2018)
We can get closer to these fitness guidelines by getting creative! Follow @crossfitwestsantacruz and @danieljcrossfit to get started. No equipment needed, just a positive attitude and consistency.
