I can’t stop listening / watching the new song and video that came out today from Taylor Rae, an acoustic live single – “Not Mine”. The first time I heard this song, and most likely most peoples first time, was at Moe’s Alley almost exactly one year ago to the date. It was an instant hit. Sometimes songs take a while to sink in until you really like them and catch the melody. But that is not the case with “Not Mine”. From the very first lyrics I was hooked… We were a mess in the makin’, I was never yours for the takin’, You told me we were fine, I was shakin’… Then moving into the chorus – How do you sleep at night? Oh that’s right, You don’t, And that’s why I Never tried to rationalize… How could you not be hooked??
It’s no secret we are huge Taylor Rae fans here at Event Santa Cruz. Watching her music career grow to what it is today really makes us proud of our Santa Cruz native (and more specifically San Lorenzo Valley). But it all comes down to the music and “Not Mine” hits and emotional music nerve in all the right ways.
From Taylor: “This song is about seeing the light after having been gaslit for a long time. It’s raw, it’s heavy, and it’s personal. I played this song at every single show on tour this year, and it has allowed me to relate with so many who have shared a similar experience. I feel like that audience/artist connection is mutually healing. My plan was (is) to put it on my next album, but I just couldn’t wait that long. 🖤 Hope you enjoy.”
Not Mine
Written by Taylor Rae
We were a mess in the makin’
I was never yours for the takin’
You told me we were fine, I was shakin’
You’ve always been fucking good at fakin’
Never thought I’d be on this end
The way you sell you’re pretty lies
Like a new trend
Oh you really had me goin
How do you sleep at night?
Oh that’s right,
You don’t
And that’s why I
Never tried to rationalize
You call me crazy
But I’m starting to think
That’s not me
That’s not mine
It feels damn good to see the light
A memory vague
Asleep at the wheel
It’s hard to believe that it was all real
Some parts of me will never heal
How do you sleep at night?
Oh that’s right,
You don’t
And that’s why I
Never tried to rationalize
You call me crazy
But I’m starting to think
That’s not me
That’s not mine
It feels damn good to see the light
The only lies I told were to myself
To get what you want, you’d wreck my mental health
You broke all your own rules
Just to play me as a fool
Sometimes I wonder how long
You would have gone doing me wrong
So how do you sleep at night
Knowing that I’m alright
I survived, oh
And it feels damn good to see the light
