SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Today Santa Cruz Mayor Sonja Brunner proclaimed the week of May 15 to 21 as National Public Works week encouraging recognition of the contributions that public works professionals make in protecting community health, safety and quality of life. The community can celebrate this year’s “Ready and Resilient” national theme by touring one to three of the City’s current construction sites at lunch hour, 12:30 to 1/1:30 p.m., starting Tuesday, May 17, through Thursday, May 19.
On Tuesday, May 17, Associate Professional Engineer Miguel Lizarraga will lead a tour of the West Cliff Path Storm Damage Repair Project. Community members should meet on the bluff side of West Cliff Drive at Swanton Avenue.
On Wednesday, May 18, Senior Civil Engineer Josh Spangrud will lead a tour of the Highway 1/9 Intersection Improvements Project. Community members may park in the Ross Store parking lot, then walk to meet on the sidewalk on the southeast project corner.
On Thursday, May 19, Senior Civil Engineer Steve Wolfman will lead a tour of the Trevethan Avenue Storm/Sewer Project. Community members should meet at the intersection of Marnell and Melrose avenues.
The Highway 1/9 Intersection Improvements Project will provide traffic operation and safety improvements by reconstructing the existing intersection to accommodate additional lanes, safety lighting, green bike lanes, sidewalks and accessibility ramps that meet current standards. The West Cliff Path Storm Damage Repair Project will repair storm damage, move the expanse of path from Chico Avenue to Swanton Boulevard back towards West Cliff Drive, and construct a retaining wall, barrier rail and guardrail. The Trevethan Avenue Storm/Sewer Project will reduce flooding, provide more capacity for the sewer system, and improve existing street conditions.
Youth under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult for all tours.
The Public Works Week “Ready & Resilient“ theme honors the City’s Public Works staff who are always ready to serve and are resilient in completing their work even when encountering additional challenges created by the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic. This includes City of Santa Cruz Public Works staff across five divisions: Resource Recovery, Wastewater System, Engineering, Operations, and Traffic Engineering/Parking.
