Local Artist Spotlight: Annika Layne
In her emerging art practice, Santa Cruz based artist Annika Layne explores nostalgia and the impact of color on our psychology through representational landscapes and color field abstract painting.
Resonating with Realists and Minimalists, Annika’s paintings range from abstract color orbs painted in neon acrylic to highly detailed landscapes in oil, the latter of which pay homage to film photography and feelings of nostalgia associated with familiar land and cityscapes.
Originally from the Sierra Nevadas, she found comfort in her surrounding landscapes, and began her career painting from photos she would take while exploring the natural world. As her art career has grown, she’s tapped into the understanding that our home environments have a deep effect on our mental and physical well-being and began to focus on the theory that color itself can provide a positive energy which influences us on a physiological level. This exploration has brought her most recent collection ‘Dayglow’ to fruition.
Her work will be available to view this weekend, May 7th, from 11am – 5pm at her Open Studio event. Both her abstract paintings and highly detailed landscapes will be available to view and collect.
