Tannery Arts Center
SANTA CRUZ, CA — Starting June 5, the community is invited to celebrate the San Lorenzo River through public art installations, virtual performance, and activities as part of the Ebb & Flow River Arts Festival.
In its 6th year, Ebb & Flow 2020 will continue to deepen and inform the Santa Cruz community’s relationship with the San Lorenzo River and the Tannery Arts Center through creative educational activities and storytelling. Permanent and temporary public art will be at the center of this year’s celebration. Local artists are designing works that will elevate water literacy, connect us to the land and its history, cultivate our sense of belonging, and inspire curiosity about the impact we have on the river system.
“Ebb & Flow has helped to creatively reintroduce so many in our community to the river that runs through the heart of our community,” said Bonnie Lipscomb, Director of Economic Development for the City of Santa Cruz. “Through stewardship, art, and education, Ebb & Flow has become an annual Santa Cruz tradition that deepens the bonds within our community.”
Ebb & Flow is made possible through Arts Council Santa Cruz County’s generous partners, including Santa Cruz City Arts, Coastal Watershed Council, Radius Gallery, Tannery World Dance & Cultural Center, Tannery Arts Center, and talented local artists.
“Ebb & Flow has helped change the conversation about the San Lorenzo River,” says Laurie Egan, Programs Director of the Coastal Watershed Council. “It’s been transformational in connecting artists, river enthusiasts and community members in enjoying this beautiful natural corridor that runs through our city. It inspires people to commit to being a steward of this critical natural resource.”

Timerie Gordon – Fishing Rods Installation
Timerie Gordon’s iconic Fishing Rods will once again be installed on the Water St. bridge to welcome visitors to the river.
Yolande Harris & Radius Gallery – “From a Whale’s Back” Interactive Exhibit
Radius Gallery at the Tannery Arts Center will be hosting a visual and sound interactive exhibit from artist Yolande Harris. Large-scaled projections of video and sound will surround visitors in the gallery, using sound compositions from hydrophones recorded in the San Lorenzo River, Monterey Bay and Pacific Ocean. Yolande will lead Sonic Walks inviting visitors to listen to an original soundtrack on headphones as they walk along the Riverwalk.
Ebb & Flow Coloring Book – Local artists
A group of local artists including Irene Juarez O’Connell, Victor Cervantes, Margaret Niven and Anna Oneglia are teaming up to create a special bilingual Ebb & Flow coloring book. This book will spark young imaginations and share exciting knowledge about the ecosystem of the San Lorenzo River. Artwork will feature the flora and fauna of the San Lorenzo River and the rich community and culture in which they live. Mural – Sarah Bianco & Rachel Barnes
Tannery resident artists, Sarah Bianco and Rachel Barnes, are creating an “iSpy creatures of the San Lorenzo River” mural in celebration of the Ebb and Flow festival. This site specific location, which is a short wall between the San Lorenzo River and the playground at the Tannery Arts Center, intends to be a playful interactive piece for the child in each of us to enjoy. The signature styles of each of these artists will be interwoven to illustrate some of the native flora and fauna in their first collaboration together, with an unveiling at the end of June.

The Tannery Arts Center is a live/work art community providing a sustainable, accessible and vibrant home for the arts in Santa Cruz County.
